Clinical Pilates AZ combines the art and science of Pilates, Kinesiology and Occupational Therapy to examine and educate intentional movement for improved function. We strive to provide current research, education and workshops to enable instructors & therapists to confidently work with clients using Pilates-based rehabilitation techniques. We work towards creating a dialog between professions and differing Pilates professionals to find common ground among the clients we serve.
Low back pain has an extremely high prevalence in our society, upwards of 70% of individuals will suffer from back pain at some point after 25 years of age. Most causes are mechanical in nature meaning they derive from how we hold ourselves in day-to-day activities, leisure, work, etc. On top of that, according to the CDC, chronic disease & illness account for over 75% of our nations healthcare dollars. With statistics such as these, it is more than common that as Pilates instructors we will be seeing a client that has a chronic disorder, injury, or illness. Clinical Pilates AZ will educate instructors and clinicians on the best exercises and techniques to use for clients with chronic injury and illness to help strengthen, rehabilitate and produce their highest level of function.
Clinical Pilates AZ was founded by Kara Rice, MOT, OTR/L, CPT to bridge the gap between Pilates education, therapeutic knowledge, and real-world function.
Kara Rice has worked in the health care and wellness industry since 2001. She became an ACE-certified personal trainer after completing a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Three years later Kara completed a Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy, interested in the holistic aspect of the field. She is a Certified Pilates Teacher and continues to enhance her knowledge by taking lessons with classically trained instructors. She holds certifications in many therapeutic modalities and treatments such as Kinesiotaping, ergonomic assessments, Functional Capacity Evaluations, and Integrated Neuromuscular Re-education. Kara most recently became certified in Fascial Stretch Therapy, and enjoys learning about the Schroth Method for treatment of scoliosis.
Kara’s educational background provides her with the ability to make proper modifications and appropriate exercises to train functionally and effectively. She has a strong working knowledge of anatomy and biomechanics which allows her to train clients in a pain-free safe environment. She has years of experience working with clients towards improving function, gaining motion and improving balance. These have included physicians, nurses, athletes, moms, and clients looking to prevent orthopedic surgery. She also enjoys working with more complex cases including MS, Parkinson’s, Fibromyalgia, Rheumatoid Arthritis, TBI, SCI, Scoliosis, and children with sensory integrative disorders.
